The Environment Liaison Center International (ELCI) is a non-governmental membership organization that emerged and was established from the first Earth Summit in Stockholm in 1972. This initiative was aimed at monitoring the activities of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and help NGOs and UNEP work more effectively.
ELCI has a membership network of over 800 member organizations in over 100 countries all working towards a more sustainable world. ELCI has a consultative status with the Commission for Sustainable Development (UN CSD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
ELCI activities are concentrated in five thematic areas: Forests, water, energy, agriculture, and environmental governance. For each thematic area, a variety of approaches and projects are implemented. These are based at the local, national and regional levels, with cross-cutting initiatives concentrating around international fora.
ELCI focuses on the linkages between the local and the global, especially on those initiatives that bring policy or ideas to the grassroot level, or 'on-the-ground' case studies and lessons learned to the level of decision-makers.
The main aspects of this work are communication, information generation and dissemination aimed at environmental conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources.
In addition, ELCI focuses on the link between civil society and UNEP, encouraging a stronger advisory role of NGOs in UNEP decision-making.
